Cleaning Protocols for Families with Autoimmune Disorders

For families managing lupus, MS, or other autoimmune conditions, the wrong cleaning products can trigger dangerous flares. Here's the protocol we use to keep your home safe.

Why Standard Cleaning Can Be Dangerous

For the 50 million Americans living with autoimmune disorders — including lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and Crohn's disease — the home environment isn't just about cleanliness. It's about survival.

Many commercial cleaning products contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs), synthetic fragrances, phthalates, and chlorine-based chemicals that can trigger immune responses, respiratory distress, and symptom flares in immunocompromised individuals.

The Chemicals to Eliminate

These are the primary offenders we remove from our protocols when serving autoimmune households:

  • Synthetic fragrances — often contain hidden phthalates and allergens
  • Ammonia — respiratory irritant; dangerous for those with lung involvement
  • Chlorine bleach — powerful but harsh; off-gasses chloramine gases
  • Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives — found in some all-purpose sprays
  • Triclosan — an antibacterial linked to endocrine disruption

Our Safe Cleaning Protocol

1. Pre-clean communication. Before arriving, we discuss specific triggers with the client or caregiver. Every household is different.

2. Fragrance-free, low-VOC products only. We use certified fragrance-free formulas from brands like Seventh Generation Free & Clear, Branch Basics, and Force of Nature.

3. Microfiber-first approach. Microfiber cloths and mops physically lift 99% of surface bacteria without relying on chemical saturation — reducing the total product volume in the air.

4. Ventilation-first entry. Our team opens windows and creates cross-ventilation before beginning. All products are allowed to fully dry before the client re-enters the space.

5. HEPA filtration vacuums. We use commercial HEPA vacuums that capture particles down to 0.3 microns — including mold spores, dust mite debris, and pet dander that can activate immune responses.

6. No aerosol sprays. All applications are pump-spray or direct-apply to cloth — never aerosol misting.

Communicating with Your Cleaning Team

If you or a family member has an autoimmune condition, share:

  • Specific chemical sensitivities or confirmed allergies
  • Rooms or materials that need special attention
  • Whether the client will be home during cleaning
  • Any physician-recommended restrictions

At Impress Service LLC, we document these protocols per client and carry them into every visit. Your health drives every product choice we make.
